Alte University School of Medicine is an innovative educational institute where students come
from all around the world to study medicine. It was founded in 2002. Alte University is the new
name of Tbilisi Open University. The aim of the medical program at Alte University is to prepare
internationally qualified, highly skilled medical professionals by instilling contemporary skills,
values, and methods in both practical and theoretical applications of medicine. The program
encompasses various teaching methodologies and is divided into four phases, each emphasizing
different aspects of medical education.

Teaching Methodologies:
The course is structured into four phases:
Phase 1 – Foundation: Integrates key foundational fields (biochemistry, anatomy, physiology) with practical fields (radiology, clinical skills). Provides a practical understanding of theoretical fields.
Phase 2 – Pre-clinical: Focuses on understanding the syndromic and symptomatic effects of diseases through clinical analysis of patient conditions.
Phase 3 – Clinical: Involves identification and analysis of medical diseases specific to disciplines such as obstetrics-gynaecology, paediatrics, and surgery
during hospital shifts.
Phase 4 – Actual Clinical Practice: Applies accumulated knowledge in various ways, including independent clinical procedures, medical research, seminars, workshops.
Together with curricular courses, school offers exchange programs and preparatory courses for licensing exams and residencies in the US and India.
The mission of the International Medical School is to empower and help every single person, who wants to become a competent doctor and health professional, to educate and empower future clinicians to practice patient-centered medicine of the highest standard, prepare competent and compassionate world-class healthcare physicians while fostering a diverse community of aspiring healthcare professionals from around the globe. The international medical program follows the standards set by the World Federation for Medical Education. The International School of Medicine is a member of both the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA) and the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE). The diploma of Alte University is recognized in all European countries, in the USA by ECFMG, in Turkey, India, and in many other countries. The course is taught in English.
After the course completion, degree holders can continue their study for a Doctorate, or apply for a Residency course, or a residency course equivalent in accordance with laws of their counties, and after completing a standardized unified state examination can begin to pursue their own medical practice. This university is approved by, NMC, WHO, WFME, ECFMG, FAIMER, MC. Its MBBS program is recognized and approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
Main features of the GAU MD curriculum are:
- Partly integrated core curriculum with both vertical and horizontal integration
- Increasing number of electives over the years of study
- A body-system approach – integrated system-based courses address the major body systems
- Courses of Problem- and Case-based learning
- Spiral model of the curriculum that allows reviewing key basic topics in more depth
- Early exposure to clinical settings and mastering clinical skills throughout the 6 years
- Longitudinal research skills teaching
- Social and public health including Medical Ethics, Behavioral Medicine, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Evidence-based Medicine, Health Law, Healthcare management
- Student-oriented approach with increasing role of independent study
- Relevant assessment methods based on Miller’s pyramid model including traditional (oral/written) examinations, MCQ testing, OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) and portfolio
- Meeting requirements set out in Global standards of undergraduate medical education of World Federation for Medical Education (WFME)
- Clinical training components of the study program are implemented through agreements with a number of medical clinics and hospitals
